Core Skills Curriculum Overview for Key Stage 3

At Key Stage 3, students in groups 7B4, 7A4, 8B4, and 8A4 participate in six hours of Core Skills instruction over a two-week timetable. In contrast, students in groups 7B3, 7A3, 8B3, and 8A3 receive two hours of Core Skills during the same period.

    Year Group Structure:

    • Year 7: Four sets, each divided into three smaller groups.
    • Year 8: Four sets, each divided into three smaller groups.

Please note that the only groups that continue from Year 7 through to Year 11 are 7B4 and 8B4.

    Core Skills Components:

    1. Writing Workshop:
Students engage in a creative/descriptive writing exercise, choosing from several prompts. They will go through the process of planning, drafting, and publishing their completed pieces.

    2. Mathematics:
Tailored topics are covered to reinforce the lessons taught in the Mathematics department, with specific content adjusted based on the abilities of the different sets.

    3. Guided Reading:
Students read various texts in small groups, typically covering one chapter per lesson. Each session includes a discussion and a series of questions to ensure comprehension. Texts may include The Two Jacks, The Curious Case of the Stolen Show, Arabian Nights, Hostage, and Gizmo Again.

    4. Data Testing:
Regular assessments are conducted to monitor student progress, allowing us to adjust group placements based on ability.

This structured approach helps us tailor learning experiences to the unique needs of each group.

Core Skills Curriculum Overview for Key Stage 4

We are currently preparing Year 11 students for their Functional English exams in Core Skills using past practice papers and real exam formats. The assessment consists of three components:

    1. Reading Paper: A one-hour examination focused on comprehension and analysis.
    2. Writing Paper: A one-hour examination that assesses students' writing skills.
    3. Speaking and Listening Component: Students will deliver a filmed presentation on a chosen topic and engage in a small group discussion. Both the presentation and discussion will be submitted to the exam board as part of their qualification requirements.

This qualification is recognised by future employers, similar to the Functional Mathematics exam. Students have the opportunity to achieve Level 1 or Level 2 grades in these assessments.
