French
In Key Stage 3, students engage with all four language skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—across a variety of topics. They learn to manipulate the language effectively in preparation for Key Stage 4, practicing translation, role-plays, and familiarizing themselves with authentic materials.
A strong emphasis is placed on phonics as well as the cultural traditions of French-speaking countries.
The topics explored in Years 7 and 8 include:
- Personal details and descriptions of others
- Family dynamics
- Education systems in the UK and French-speaking countries
- Hobbies, including sports and social media
- Culinary traditions and popular dishes
- Geographic awareness and the concept of home
- Socializing and recreational activities
- Physical and mental health
Spanish
In Key Stage 3, students learn to converse about their lives and express opinions in Spanish. They are introduced to transactional language and a more formal register, with a strong emphasis on phonics.
By the end of Key Stage 3, pupils will have developed the ability to use three tenses: past, present, and future. The curriculum focusses on building essential language skills, ensuring a smooth transition to the GCSE level. Students will also engage with the four key skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—necessary for success in their GCSE studies.
Additionally, our curriculum emphasises cultural awareness, providing students with a rich understanding of the Spanish-speaking world.
