We believe that all pupils need to be able to handle numeracy as well as they can.

We have a range of interventions that help us to develop numeracy at the school.

Numeracy Ninjas

We have been running regular numeracy competitions for the whole school during morning registration with certificates and prizes for the classes that get the highest scores each week.

Numeracy Mentors

Volunteers from National Grid come in to school for an hour each week to offer 1 to 1 support for younger children to improve their numeracy skills.

Numeracy Classes

Pupils in some classes have extra maths and English lessons. During these lessons some of the time is set aside for improving their basic numeracy skills. These groups are part of the pupils’ timetables and so they are not missing other important curriculum subjects.

Numeracy Intervention

We employ a Teaching Assistant, Frida Stroncekova, within the maths department to help pupils to improve their numeracy skills. This could be through in-class support or small intervention groups. We employ a further  two intervention teachers, Amy Soper and Paul Kent to support older pupils preparing for their maths GCSE examinations.

MyMaths Website

We pay a subscription to the maths support website MyMaths in order to allow pupils to test themselves and find which areas of maths they need to improve. The site includes revision activities, and video tutorials, games online tests. Pupils will need to get their individual passwords from their maths teachers.

As pupils work through the work on the website it builds up a complete picture of their strengths and area for development in each of the main areas of maths.

Sumdog Website

The website Sumdog is a maths site where pupils can practice their numeracy skills against the computer, with other children in the same class or against children around the world. Pupils can set up their own free account at home or through the school.

 As pupils increase their skill level they move up the ranks and so they can see the progress they are making.
