What is the course about?

 

Health & Social Care provides a unique opportunity to study a vocational course at A level standard. This challenging and interesting course will provide you with the skills and knowledge essential for a career working with people within the care sector. You will learn how to provide the best possible service to people of all ages and with widely differing needs.

How will I be assessed?

 

AS Level

Unit 1: Human Growth and Development- 1h 30m exam paper (33.3%) – in this unit you will learn about life stages, factors that can influence human growth and development and definitions of what it means to be healthy.

 

Unit 2: Communications and Values – internal assessment (33.3%) – in this unit you will develop an understanding of the importance of communication in all caring activities and about values involved in care.

 

Unit 3: Positive Care Environments – internal assessment (33.3%) – in this unit you will develop an understanding that positive care practice relies on practitioners having a comprehensive understanding of the diverse society we live in.

 

A Level

Unit 7: Meeting Individual Needs - 1h 30m exam paper (33.3%) – in this unit you will learn about how services are tailored to meet individual needs.

 

Unit 8: Promoting Health and Wellbeing – internal assessment (33.3%) – in this unit you will learn about why health promotion campaigns are carried out and how topics and target groups are identified.

 

Unit 9: Investigating Disease – internal assessment (33.3%) - in this unit you will learn about the biological basis of disease, the ways in which a diagnosis may be made, the availability of treatment, the factors that may influence the outcomes of the treatments and the strategies for preventing the spread of disease.

How will this course help me in the future?

 

Students can progress to a huge variety of health, social care and early years related degree courses depending on their interests and other A level options. Many students progress on to careers in working with children including early years and teaching, as well as other health and care sectors such as midwifery, nursing and social work. This course can also be used as an entry qualification into a wide range of employment opportunities in care work.
