AQA English

What is the course about?

As of September 2015, we will be introducing pupils to a brand new specification for English Literature: Pearson Edexcel English Literature. This course is designed to be challenging, rigorous and academically stimulating. It is also designed to help prepare pupils’ independence, ready for University.

Throughout the course, pupils will be studying a range of prose, poetry and drama literary texts from across time and genre.

At AS, pupils will study a drama text linked to the genre of ‘Tragedy’, as well as a selection of poetry from a post-2000 collection. They will also have the opportunity to study two prose texts on a theme selected by the class teacher (E.g. Childhood, Women and Society …). This will be assessed by examination at the end of Year 12.

At A2, pupils will study a Shakespeare play in depth, alongside a critical anthology linked to how tragedy is presented in the Shakespearean text studied. They will also study a second drama play, as well as two prose texts, centred around a chosen theme and a selection of poetry. This will be assessed by examination at the end of Year 13.

As part of the course, pupils will also complete one piece of coursework, which will be based upon the independent study of two prose texts of their choice. This will be a 2500-3000 word essay and will be assessed by the centre and then moderated by the exam board.

N.B. Text choices to be confirmed. This information is based upon draft specifications from the exam board.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is continuous during the course to assess progress and identify areas which need developing. Final assessment is by exam and the submission of coursework.

How will this course help me in the future?

The depth of study involved and the requirement to be able to display analytical, confident and authoritative writing skills makes English one of the ‘high profile’ subjects which can contribute to success in many fields.  It is a required subject for many further courses of study at college or university, and impresses employers too - especially where applicants may be considering management training or work place specific training.
